Treatments

Avoid the triggers

Epileptics usually react to certain situations, such as lack of sleep, computer games, emotional stress and fast flickering lights. Patients should always be attentive to the time, place and emotional state they are in, to recollect their situation when a seizure has striked again.

Surgery

A surgery is a dangerous but successful way to regain a seizure free life. Only 10% of epileptics are possible subjects to a surgery. A certain precondition has to be achieved before a surgery can take place. The patient has to have completed his medication; the seizure has to be focal and removable.

Vagus nerve -Stimulation

This method is applied as a last resort. An electronic stimulus is inserted inside the patient's chest; sending out continuous signals, stimulating the nervus vagus in the throat area. Nervus vagus is responsible for the communication between the inner organs and the brain. That way the stimulus can make the nervus vagus reduce the activity of the brain cells and thereby inhibit or reduce the attacks. The method is successful with every two out of three patients.

Ketogenic Diet

Ketogenic diet is special carbohydrate free diet that is supposed to reduce attacks. By not eating carbohydrates, the body lacks energy and starts using up the body's fat reserves. Thereby he produces ketogenes. The reason behind the success of this diet is still unknown and rarely applied in Europe.
