Irritiable bowel syndrome - IBS
Medication
A medical treatment based on drugs can only be done symptomatically and for a short time only.
Depending on the symptoms (pain, diarrhea, constipation, Wind) following drugs are prescribed:
- Metoclopramide or Domperidone (suppresses nausea, vomiting, wind; sppeds up the emtying of the stomach and should only be used for a short time.)
- Butylscopolamine, is an anticonvulsant drug against pain.
- Lowly dosed anti-depressives (e.g. Amitriptylin) as an alternative against pain and cramps, as they inhibit serotin which not only plays a role in depressions but also for the functional dyspepsia.
- Lactulose, Pectin and Flax are effective against constipation.
- antidiarrheals (e.g. Loperamide, Cromoglicate) against diarrhoea slows down the action of the gastro-intestinal system and appeases the muscles.
