Medication

Medicating a tumour is not of primary choice. The most effective cure is still surgery, whereby the damaged part is removed. Is a surgery however not possible, than a proper medication is essential. The research on cancer-curing agents is still priority in fighting the cancer.

  • Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors

Protein tyrosine kinases forward and process many extra- and intracellular signals. They are critical in regulating cell growth and differentiation and are deeply involved in the formation of the tumor. A mutation that causes certain tyrosine kinases to be constitutively active has been the associated with several cancers. The tyrosine kinase inhibitors can arrest the growth of the tumor.

  • Angiogenesis Inhibitors

Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels as outgrowths from pre-existing blood vessels. It is a normal aspect of embryonic development, and a response to wounding. Cancers also stimulate angiogenesis, apparently in response to the high demand of rapidly multiplying cancer cells for oxygen and nourishment, which reach the cancer cells via the blood system.

Inhibitors of angiogenesis block this formation and therefore they can inhibit the growth of cancers.
